Car Paint Scratch and Chip Repair

Before repairing your car paint, I highly recommend you wash your entire car with the steps provided in the report. This is because all the car paint damages will be obvious after the car is clean. Once it is done, next you have to identify what kind of damage you are trying to repair.

In general, car paint damages can be:

1. Swirl marks
2. Clearcoat scratches
3. Paint chip
4. Faded and oxidized paint

Swirl marks are damages that are caused by improper polishing techniques, using cloths which contain polyester and many other reasons. If your finger nail can’t catch these marks, they are swirl marks. Normally, these marks appear under the sun. You can remove it with a dual-action polisher, pad and abrasive compounds that is able remove a very thin layer of your color coat. Here’s a picture how swirl marks:

For clearcoat scratches, it is a deeper scratch which is visible without being under the sun but it has not reached the bare metal yet. For this kind of car paint repair, I highly recommend using abrasive pad to sand the area, use rubbing compound to buff the area and finish with scratch removing products.

Paint chips are the most common and obvious paint damage to cars which you are looking forward to fix. However, I highly recommend you to consult a professional because the process is complicated. If you insist of doing it yourself, use paint touchup pens to fill up, apply touchup clearcoat and finally level the surface with polishing products.

For faded and oxidized paint, start with cleaning the surface. After that, you can remove the oxidized paint and contaminations with a good clay bar. Next, use a dual-action polisher to apply compound and finishing polish. Don’t forget to apply a layer of sealant or car wax to protect the work.
